Amanda Anisimova knocked out the defending champion Naomi Osaka at the Australian Open and she could not quite believe it after.
It was a very closely contested match where Anisimova prevailed after playing extremely brave down the stretch. She was the player who went for it and it paid off as she completely outplayed Osaka in the final few games of the match including the tiebreak. In her post-match interview, the 20-year-old American said:
“I’m speechless. I absolutely love playing in front of you guys in Melbourne, honestly, it’s so much fun. I can’t stop smiling even when I’m playing when I should be serious. But I’m just laughing at what you guys say sometimes."
Anisimova has now reached the fourth round of a Slam for the first time since her breakthrough run to the semi-finals of the 2019 French Open as a 17-year-old. However, the American said she was just excited to be playing at the Australian Open in the first place, and in front of such a great crowd:
“Honestly, I’m so grateful I was able to play so well today and get this win, it means a lot. Stepping onto the court all I’m thinking about is just having fun. Every single day here is an amazing opportunity and experience for me. I’m so grateful to just be playing here on this court so I’m just having fun and getting the win is just a huge bonus. I’m looking forward to the next round.”
