Although several of the participants at the year-ending
WTA Finals have spoken out against the tournament organizers for their subpar facilities,
Iga Swiatek has refrained from harshly criticizing the event.
The former World No.1 defeated Marketa Vondrousova in her first round-robin match at the WTA Finals, and later gave her thoughts on the court conditions.
Swiatek supports colleagues but opts to focus on tennis
World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka has been the most vocal when it comes to criticizing the event for their court conditions and practice facilities. Although Swiatek empathized with her colleagues, the Polish star stopped just short of blaming the event coordinators.
"Obviously, it’s not a positive thing for any of us," said Swiatek. "I think the main thing is not focusing on that & just doing your job. Sometimes it bounces weirdly on clay & grass as well. I try to think in that perspective & just do my job. For sure, it’s not comfortable.
"The fact we also didn’t have time to practice on this court, you know. But at the end it doesn’t really matter because all of us have the same court and the same conditions."
Swiatek next faces Coco Gauff in what should be a blockbuster encounter.
