It has been a year of ruthless efficiency for
Garbine Muguruza, as the former World No.1 punctuated her season with a commanding win over
Iga Swiatek at the 2021
Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
In a clash between French Open champions, it was all Muguruza as the Spaniard made quick work of her Polish opponent, prevailing with a 6-0 6-4 victory to advance to the quarterfinals.
"From the beginning, I was there to control the score, and was taking the advantage," Muguruza said after the match. "I think she missed, in the first set, a couple of shots here and there that gave me the extra advantage."
The 2016 Roland Garros champion has reached two WTA singles finals this season, and is probably one of the most in-form players on tour at the moment.
"I think I took my opportunities, and I was efficient when I had to break her serve, or stay with my serve," Muguruza added. "Just happy with the way I started. I was very focused, looking forward to the match as well. Sometimes you start a little bit off, but today I felt good on the court."
"It felt like every point was very fast, we didn’t have that many long rallies today, so it felt like in a blink you could go 3-0 up or 3-0 down. I feel like the way we play on the surface, it’s not really the match to have 20-ball rallies."
The two-time Grand Slam champion is leading the tour with a 15-4 win record, having fallen just shy of her first title this season in Doha a few days ago. She will face third seed Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals, with Muguruza prevailing in their most recent encounter in Doha last week.
