Coco Gauff
expressed her opinion that combined ATP and WTA events help attract larger
crowds, following a sold-out Mubadala Citi DC Open.
The
19-year-old rising star is currently one of the biggest attractions on the WTA
tour, especially in her home country of the United States, where she has won
the hearts of the fans.
Gauff has
not disappointed this week in Washington, where she entered as the third seed
and has already reached the final of the event.
The
tournament has brought even more good news for Gauff, as she highlighted the
positive ticket sales at the DC Open, demonstrating that in combined ATP and
WTA events, women can draw larger crowds.
“It was
almost a sold out crowd. t shows we can bring as many crowds as the men in
combined events. Hopefully we do more of them,” Gauff said.
”I think
both the fans and the players like it. I really think that it pushes tennis to
even more of a global standard than it already is when we do have this combined
event,” world No. 7 added.
The
American started the US Open series tournaments on hard courts in great form.
After a disappointing first-round loss at Wimbledon against Sofia Kenin, Gauff
traveled to the United States and began her preparation for the US Open at the
WTA 500 Washington.
Thanks to a
bye in the first round, she made her debut in the round of 16 against Haley
Baptiste and then defeated Belinda Bencic in the quarterfinals to advance to
the semifinals against Liudmila Samsonova, whom she defeated in two sets.
This will
be Gauff's second final of the year. In the first one, she defeated Rebeka
Masarova to lift the WTA 250 Auckland Open title prior to the Australian Open.
This time, she will face the Greek and world No. 8, Maria Sakkari, who defeated
Jessica Pegula to advance to the final.
