Anett Kontaveit went on a brilliant run late in the season to win several trophies and book a spot at the
WTA Finals.
Not much needs to be said about the run Anett Kontaveit put together in the final few weeks of the season. The Estonian player had a very slight chance of making it to the WTA Finals and she needed back-to-back trophies in Moscow and Cluj-Napoca. She was able to do that and ultimately knock Jabeur out of the 8th spot for the Finals.
Naturally, Kontaveit could not quite belivee what had happened when asked about it:
“Absolutely not. I have no idea what’s going on. I thought it was such a longshot to reach the WTA Finals.”
It quite was and the performance she put forward to do so was marvelous. Before this season Kontaveit had only one career title won in 2017 yet now she has four to her name. Three of those came in the final month half of play. Kontaveit went 15-0 across events in Ostrava, Czech Republic, Moscow, Russia, and Cluj, Romania.
