"It would have been unfair" admits Swiatek on 2020 WTA Finals

Iga Swiatek will play in her maiden WTA Finals in 2021 yet the Polish player would have played in 2020 had they gone ahead.

The 2020 WTA Finals did not go ahead because of the pandemic and Iga Swiatek, who would have played at that event, believes it was fair to cancel the event. The Polish player had her breakout year in 2020 winning her maiden grand slam trophy at Roland Garros. That result would have allowed her to play at the WTA Finals had they gone ahead however she believes it would not have been fair.

Speaking on that she said:

“It wouldn’t have been fair [to contest the finals] since there were so few tournaments and many players didn’t play. I know that the Covid situation and the break that we had on tour probably helped me a lot. I don’t know if I would have had the same success if we didn’t have Covid.”

It's a fair assessment by Swiatek who is set to make her debut at the WTA Finals in a couple of days when the 2021 edition begins. She is finally happy to be able to make her debut and recollecting her memory from when the 2020 edition got canceled she said:

“I wouldn’t say that I was disappointed because last year was pretty tricky for me. I was happy that Roland Garros was the last tournament because I could learn how to deal with all the new reality and new obligations.”
