Iga Swiatek has called for room for improvement when it comes to WTA marketing and said it should be better. The World No.2 spoke about it after defeating Coco Gauff at the
WTA Finals.
She said that from her perspective as a player, the empty stands in particular are damning and doesn't make it feel like it is a tennis celebration which is a shame given the amount of effort that is put in by the players to play to the highest standard and hopes that situations like Cancun can finally be put to bed.
“Honestly, I think there’s plenty they can do. It’s a pretty weird situation where we have meetings with the WTA & we kind of explain to them what should be done sometimes. For sure, there’s potential to work on that. Obviously, they decided late that we’re going to play here," said Swiatek in Cancun.
"The marketing should be better. It’s a shame we don’t have a full stadium & we can’t really feel like we’re at like a tennis celebration for the whole week. But it is what it is. Hopefully for the future there won’t be any more situations like that & they’re going to work to improve that because we’re doing our best at every tournament. In Grand Slams we have full stands basically even sometimes in 2nd rounds… There’s definitely room for improvement.”
