Leylah
Fernandez played doubles with
Gabriela Dabrowski in the
Billie Jean King Cup
and highlighted the importance of the experience for her future.
Canada
reached the playoffs of the Billie Jean King Cup with the significant absence
of their top-ranked player,
Bianca Andreescu, and had to face a tough opponent
in the Belgian team. The series was decided in the doubles after a 2-2 tie in
singles matches (with two victories by Fernandez and losses by Rebecca Marino
and Katherine Sebov), and it was the 2021 US Open finalist who took on the
responsibility alongside doubles specialist Gabriela Dabrowski, currently
ranked world No. 7.
The
Canadian team faced Kirsten Flipkens and Greet Minnen, who were unable to do
much against the explosive pair of North Americans, resulting in a 6-1, 6-2
victory and qualification for Canada. After the doubles match,
Leylah Fernandez
shared her joy: "Playing with (Dabrowski) is always a privilege,"
Leylah said. "She's such a great doubles specialist. She sees the court so
beautifully, and I get to experience that with her. It's something I would like
to learn and get better at along the way."
Fernandez
is accustomed to playing in both singles and doubles draws, and this season she
has achieved some good results. She started a partnership with American player
Taylor Townsend at Indian Wells, and two weeks later they reached the final of
the Miami Open, where they were defeated by the pair of Pegula and Gauff.
