Victoria Azarenka started off her Roland Garros campaign by defeating Danka Kovinic in straight sets in a match that featured delays and controversy.
The Roland Garros this year started in less than favourable conditions and many players have spoken about the issues but Victoria Azarenka went even further stopping the match after it began. She ultimately did return to the court to continue the sweep she started earlier and she was soon through to the next round. Speaking of the situation Vika said:
"When I was warming up it was already drizzling. So when it drizzles for about two hours in a row, it kind of gets a little heavier... It's very tricky at the moment to have these conditions."
She continued:
"We talked with the supervisor. She was very kind to let us know that there was another heavier cloud to go by, [and] once that passes, we're going to go on the court, so we were ready to play whenever they called us."
Turning attention to her play Azarenka played splendid tennis all throughout the match. On her performance she said:
"Today, I felt that I moved actually really well. I was very fluid, I was very fluid with my movement. I was able it slide everywhere. So I guess when I focus on what I need to do better, these things kind of come automatically. It's all about adjustment these two weeks. Some shots that I hit today, I don't know if it was good tennis or it was just great adjustments because they weren't really pretty shots sometimes."
When asked about the possibility of facing Venus she said that there would be no surprises there as they both know each other. Regrettably, Venus lost her match, so Azarenka will face Schmiedlova who is not a known commodity to her.
