"The perfect present was that I won today" - Halep on birthday victory at Roland Garros

Simona Halep celebrated her birthday by giving herself the perfect present in a fast and easy 1st round victory at the Roland Garros.

"The perfect present was that I won today, of course. It was a really special day playing on Roland Garros on my birthday. So it's going to be pretty unique, maybe forever."

That she played on her birthday wasn't the only fascinating thing about this match as she also featured in the first women's match below the new roof. On that she said:

"I was very honoured to open actually this roof, to be the first women's match. It was much better because we could play and the rain didn't stop us at all. Even if it was a little bit heavy, because of the weather, it was good conditions to play on this rainy day."

Despite the closed roof Halep still felt the cold and it bothered her but she fought through knowing the conditions were equal for both players. On that she said:

"Still, I felt the cold. I'm not very happy with the cold in general. So it was a little bit tough. I struggled. But, you know, I just have in my mind it is for both of us the same, so I have just to keep calm. The fact that I could change a little bit the tactic during the match, it makes me very pleased with the victory."
