For the longest time, Williams has been trying to equal Margaret Court's 24 grand slam singles record with her own being at 23.
Since winning her 23rd, Williams played a couple of finals but lost each one. Ahead of her last one at this year's US Open, Williams said that she has already broken that record. While factually untrue many fans would argue that Williams is making a good point having won that many in an era of tennis that was far more competitive than that of Court:
"I've already broken the record. So I think it's just someone else's vision and mine is just to ... I never dreamed of having this many Grand Slams or titles. I just thought I would just play tennis and maybe win a Grand Slam or two. So for me, it's all a bonus."
It's a record she wanted to match as she admitted in her retirement peace for Vogue however she has come to terms with most likely not getting it. It won't matter much as she holds many other incredible records.
The legend will face Danka Kovinic in round one which is a great matchup for Williams according to PAM Shriver. The Australian will help Williams in her final event and she will face a player who hardly won in the past couple of months.
