Ons Jabeur and
Ajla Tomljanovic have secured a quarterfinal in New York by beating Samsonova and Kudermetova.
Tomljanovic ousted Serena Williams in the 3rd round and she proved it's not by chance by beating Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets. The Russian has already won two trophies this hard court season and looked in really good shape here as well.
Samsonova was up 4-1 but just like Williams, she could not stay in front. The Australian battled all the way back to 4-5 and saved 7 set points in that game to make it 5-5. In the tiebreak, Tomljanovics saved another one to make and used her 3rd to take it 10-8. Samsonova never recovered and got smashed 6-1 in the second set.
Joining her in the quarterfinal will be Ons Jabeur, a player who never played at that stage of the event. To get there, she needed to beat Veronika Kudermetova and she did. Jabeur trailed 2-5 in the first set taking some time to finally find a very good rhythm but once she did everything changed.
She smashed Kudermetova 7-1 in the tiebreak and proceeded to play well in the second set taking an early lead. She kept up her level and cruised to a 6-4 finish and her maiden
US Open quarterfinal.
