Ons Jabeur talked about the flu that affected her and the "stomach issues" that other tennis players have faced at the US Open.
The Tunisian was one of those affected by a mysterious illness at Flushing Meadows. Several WTA and ATP players have been affected by some kind of illness and have required medical attention during their matches.
First, it was Jabeur in her match against Camila Osorio in the first round, and a few hours later, Emil Ruusuvuori retired while playing against Andrey Rublev, because of sickness.
Dominic Thiem and Christopher Eubanks also appeared to be dealing with an illness in the second round. The 2020 US Open champion supposedly vomited shortly before his match with Ben Shelton and ended up retiring during the match. Eubanks also seemed visibly affected in his match against Benjamin Bonzi.
During a press conference, Jabeur was asked if she was affected by the same illness as her colleagues:
"Actually my stomach is fine. It's not the stomach. I think I got a flu or something. I know some other players got stomach issues. Not me, thankfully."
The Tunisian mentioned that the vacation she took after Wimbledon helped her recover, and she will arrive with energy for the Asian tour following the US Open:
"I'm a zombie because I have a flu, otherwise... No, honestly I talked about this. I took vacation after Wimbledon. I think that really helped me kind of take a second breath for the rest of the season," Ons Jabeur said.
"I feel like I will be tired maybe around Beijing. That's when it's going to get tough. But I think maybe last year's season helped me get used to playing a lot of matches. Yeah, emotionally could be tired, but I know if I just let go, I will regret it after, so I want to continue and stay in New York as long as I can," she added.
