Jennifer
Brady made her return to professional tennis at an ITF W100 tournament after
being away from the tour for two years.
The
28-year-old American had experienced a series of unfortunate years in her
career, but between 2020 and 2021, she enjoyed the best seasons of her career.
After the
restart of the WTA tour in 2020, Brady immediately showed her form by winning
her first tournament at the WTA 250 Lexington Open, defeating Jil Teichmann in
the final. Her momentum continued two weeks later at the 2020 US Open, where
she reached the semifinals as the 28th seed, only to fall to the eventual
champion and 4th seed, Naomi Osaka.
Even more
impressive was her performance at the 2021
Australian Open, where she reached
the final but once again faced a tough defeat against Naomi Osaka. Despite the
loss, Brady climbed to the world No. 13 in a short period and became known as a
formidable opponent, especially in Grand Slam events.
Unfortunately,
injuries hindered her progress, and her last match was at the 2021 Cincinnati
Open, where she retired in the middle of the second-round match against Jelena
Ostapenko while leading 7-6, 4-5.
Recently,
there was good news for Brady as she made her comeback, playing her first match
in 23 months and securing a victory against Japan's Kroka Okamura. She is
currently competing in an ITF W100 tournament in Granby, Canada, as she is
still without a ranking and needs positive results to return to the major
tournaments.
Before her
debut in the tournament, Brady expressed her joy at overcoming her injury and
shared her optimistic outlook for the future. She is determined to work hard
and regain her form on the professional tour.
"Big
week this week. Playing my first match back. It's my first tournament back in
almost two years. I'm in Granby, Canada. Super thrilled and I just want to say
it's about damn time finally, getting back out there playing again."
Brady, who
has successfully recovered from a challenging foot injury, will play her next
match on Wednesday, July 19th, against another Japanese player, Himeno
Sakatsume, who is the 6th seed in the tournament.
