Jessica Pegula will have another chance of winning the
Madrid Open trophy after failing to do that last year though this will be in doubles together with
Coco Gauff.
The American duo have been one of the better doubles pairings for a while now and they will attempt to add another trophy to their cabinet in Madrid. They faced Ruse and Kostyuk in the semi-final and were able to keep the match relatively complications-free winning in straight sets. Being heavy favourites before the match certainly helped them however it wasn't as easy as some might expected.
They fell behind early 0-3 but managed to stabilise their play by winning a few games. Still, their opponents managed to hold the lead until it was 5-2 when the comeback started. The Americans won five games in a row to take the opening set 7-5 and it was a superb comeback. The problem for the Romanian-Ukranian combo was largely they play on the serve because they allowed far too many chances to their opponents.
7 break chances in total were simply too much to overcome though they saved four of those. The second set was another close one but once again Kostyuk and Ruse failed to hold their serve when they needed to. They were up a break twice in the second set but they lost both advantages. The tiebreak was close but ultimately the American prevailed advancing to the finals.
