Jessica Pegula (No. 5) effortlessly cruises past Magda
Linette (No. 63) 6-2, 6-2, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Charleston
Open. The American wasn't having a great 2024 season, plagued by injuries and
early exits in tournaments, but she seems to have regained the level and
consistency that propelled her into the top 5.
Pegula faced a tough challenge in the first round against
Amanda Anisimova, which was decided in a third-set tie-break 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3).
On the other hand,
Magda Linette scored a significant victory in the second
round by defeating the 13th seed Dayana Yastremska 0-6, 6-4, 6-3, marking
consecutive wins for the first time since October 2023 at the China Open.
The first set left little doubt about Pegula's superiority.
After Linette secured her first service game, the local tennis player won five
consecutive games, capitalizing on the two break points she had in her favor
and comfortably taking a 5-1 lead from her service. Although the Polish player
held her serve, she was far from threatening Pegula's serve before the set
ended 6-2 for the first seed, who won 84% of service points and 53% of return
points.
As the second set began, things continued to favor the
American with ease. She capitalized on two out of three opportunities at the
start of the set, taking a comfortable 4-0 lead. Linette showed nothing to
threaten Pegula's serve, committing constant unforced errors.
The Polish player managed to hold her serve for a couple of
games before Pegula closed out an impressive performance with a 6-2, 6-2
victory, securing her spot in the quarterfinals of the
Charleston Open. Her
next opponent will be the winner of the match between the 12th seed Victoria
Azarenka and American
Taylor Townsend.
