Paula
Badosa defended herself after criticism for her first-round loss at the WTA 500
Charleston Open to
Danielle Collins by 6-1, 6-4. The former world No. 2
responded on social media to a post from a Spanish outlet mentioning that she
is close to dropping out of the top 100.
The former
Indian Wells champion had a forgettable 2023 after suffering an injury
following the Italian Open in May, which forced her to withdraw from the French
Open. Upon her return at Wimbledon a month later, she played her last match of
the year before retiring mid-match against Marta Kostyuk in the second round.
Injuries
have continued to trouble the Spanish player this year, as she currently holds
a record of 5-7 in 2024. Badosa retired mid-match in the first round of the WTA
1000 Dubai Open in February and then couldn't participate in Indian Wells.
The Spanish
outlet "Deportes Cuatro" shared a news article from El Desmarque
reporting Badosa's defeat against Collins and the possibility of dropping out
of the top 100: "Paula Badosa does not raise her head: she falls
decisively in Charleston and flirts with leaving the 'top 100'," the
outlet wrote.

Paula
Badosa saw the post and responded with a tweet expressing her frustration:
"It seems too much to me to still be in the top 100 without competing for
10 months. And finally, please put a photo of me on the cover… Regrettable,"
Badosa replied.
The 26-year-old
Spaniard has dropped to world No. 90 in the live rankings and will likely fall
out of the top 100 in the coming weeks since she won't be participating in the
Stuttgart Open, where she reached the quarterfinals last year. Her return will
only be at the Madrid Open, and she is projected to have 577 points by that
time, which will place her around No. 130.
