Let’s do this 🔥 Fresh off the @MiamiOpen title, Danielle Collins and former World No. 2 Paula Badosa will square off in the first round! #CharlestonOpen
Paula Badosa faced the daunting task of starting her journey at the Charleston Open against one of the most in-form players at the moment, if not the most in-form, Danielle Collins. The American has been demolishing her opponents at the Miami Open and has shown that the transition from hardcourt to clay has not affected her at all.
Collins did the same with Badosa, just three days after her victory in Miami. The new world No. 22 swept aside the Spanish player 6-1, 6-4.
The first set was dominated by the American. She quickly took a 4-0 lead, until Badosa won her first game, ironically while serving. It took Badosa three attempts to break Collins' serve, but she finally succeeded. However, it didn't help much because in the next game, Collins broke back and closed out the set 6-1 with her serve.
In the second set, Badosa improved, although it wasn't enough to win. The beginning was a mirror image of the first, with Collins taking a 3-0 lead. However, Badosa recovered one of the two breaks lost and didn't lose her serve again in the match. But Collins maintained her one-break advantage and closed out the set 6-4 with her serve.
The American will now face Ons Jabeur, the second seed of the tournament, in the second round.
