Former world number one
Chris Evert has questioned Danielle
Collins' retirement decision after her surprising triumph at the
Miami Open.
The 30-year-old earlier announced that she would be retiring from
the sport at the end of the 2024 season. However, things are not looking the
same as she registered the most notable win of her career on Saturday as she
defeated Elena Rybakina in straight sets with a score of 7-5, 6-3.
Evert, who is regarded as one of the greatest players in the
history of women’s tennis in the singles category, having won as many as 18 Grand
Slam titles, congratulated Collins on the social media platform X — previously known
as Twitter — where she also questioned her retirement.
"A big Hug and Congratulations to
Danielle Collins in
winning the #MiamiOpen. Spectacular play throughout the whole
tournament….but…."Are you really sure you want to retire?" wrote Evert.
Collins' journey in the competition was nothing short of a fairytale.
She defeated Anastasia Potapova in the round of 64 in straight sets with a score of
6-2, 6-2. In the round of 32, she got the better of Anastasia Potapova, once again
in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
In the fourth round, Collins thrashed Sorana Cîrstea (6-3, 6-2)
and in the quarterfinal, she proved too hot to handle for America’s Caroline Garcia
(6-3, 6-2). In the semifinal, she once again registered a thumping win, this
time against Ekaterina Alexandrova with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
Interestingly,
Collins secured the title without losing a single set. On only one occasion, a player
managed to win more than three games in a set against the current world number
53 in the whole competition.
