Jessica Pegula has stated that she is
looking to celebrate her recent triumph with her mother Kim who suffered cardiac
arrest last year.
The 29-year-old defeated Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova in
straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-0 to lift the National Bank Canadian Open which
was also her first title this year.
After the match, Pegula stated that she is keen to celebrate
the victory with her mother who has had to deal with health issues in the
recent past.
"I won Guadalajara last year, and that was obviously
the same year that the incident happened,” she said. “This year I haven't
gotten to talk to her yet, but she's much more aware of what's going on and in
a much better place. So I think I'll be able to share this more with her a
little bit.
"I'm sure she probably watched and was very happy, and
the same for the rest of my family. So, yeah, I'll definitely be able to share
that moment with her as soon as I'm out of here.”
Pegula will be hoping that her recent triumph will give her
the much-needed boost ahead of the upcoming fourth Grand Slam of the year which
is set to begin in less than 20 days’ time.
Pegula’s best performance while playing at US Open was
reaching the quarterfinal last year where she was defeated by the current world
number one Poland’s Iga Swiatek with a score of 6-3, 7-6.
