John
McEnroe highlighted
Coco Gauff's achievements after winning the
US Open and
stated that he doesn't understand those who criticize her.
The former
world No. 1 was one of the experts providing commentary during the television
broadcasts at Flushing Meadows. The women's main draw produced one of its great
stories with Coco Gauff, who claimed her first Grand Slam title at the age of
19 in her home country, ending a six-year drought for American female
champions.
The young
star defeated the new world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka by turning around a match in
which the Belarusian was initially in control. The scoreline read 2-6, 6-3, 6-2
in favor of Gauff, propelling her to world No. 3, just behind Sabalenka and Iga
Swiatek.
“It is
obviously great for Americans. I’m not sure what Mats and I can add when you
have the likes of Roger Federer and Serena Williams, the Obamas paying tribute.
I mean, come on,!
“I heard
Coco talking about the people who were writing her off and saying that she was
never going to win a major. Who were those people? I’m not familiar with those
people because I think her progress has been steady,” McEnroe said.
“It has
been really positive, and she was in the final of the French. Okay, so there
were a couple of stumbling blocks along the way, but I don’t think anyone
didn’t think she was going to win a bunch of majors,” he added-
“So, well
done, Coco Gauff because, at the end of the day, Sabalenka came out on fire and
was hitting the ball absolutely huge. She had a chance in the first game of the
second set to get the early break, but she did not do so. That allowed
Gauff and her athleticism into this.”
After
becoming the champion of the US Open, Gauff won't be slowing down her schedule.
She will be playing in the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open during the week of
September 18th, where she is seeded second, just behind Swiatek.
