Karolina Pliskova was able to overcome losing the opening set against
Coco Gauff to win in the end booking a 2nd round
Madrid Open berth.
It was a spectacular match that lasted just a bit over two hours between Karolina Pliskova and Coco Gauff. Matchups like this are rare this early and it delivered. Pliskova entered this event after a solid showing on clay and she was able to display that level again today albeit in the 2nd and 3rd set.
Gauff came out strong initially attacking Pliskova on her serve repeatedly. The American was able to give Pliskova holding a lead through the set. When it was time to clinch the set Gauff faltered giving Pliskova the break back 5-5. Composing herself enough the young phenom was able to take another break before winning the set 7-5.
That win did not shake Pliskova too much who proved very resilient in Stuttgart taking a set off of eventual champion Barty. Serving superbly she was able to hold her service games with ease. Gauff on the other hand had more issues allowing a sole break point to Pliskova which the Czech player used.
The final set was a disaster for Gauff who completely lost her rhythm and very quickly she found herself down 4-0. Pliskova started playing better and better and her confidence was visible in the 3rd set. Continuing to dominate on her own serve she closed out the match with 6-2.
A very strong start for Pliskova who has struggled with form since the start of 2021.
