The Emilia-Romagna campaign for
Serena Williams came to an end as she was bested by
Katerina Siniakova today.
Katerina Siniakova upset Serena Williams at the Emilia Romagna Open defeating her 7-6(4) 6-2. The American took the Emilia-Romagna wild card in order to play some more clay matches after her quick exit from the Rome Masters. The plan kind of worked as she was able to play two more matches but her campaign ended today.
Williams faced a solid Siniakova but not a player that she should be losing to. The match started with both players saving a break point in their first service games. They continued trading games until 5-5 when Serena lost her serve in the worst possible moment. Siniakova served for the set but Williams pulled out a break to force a tiebreak.
In the tiebreak, it was Siniakova who played sharper tennis ultimately winning it 7-4. It was a disappointing loss for Serena and her body language changed quite a bit. Her played deteriorated in the 2nd even though she served as well as in the first. She made more mistakes and Siniakova was able to win most rallies.
After Serena tied it up at 2-2 Sinaikova went on a pretty easy 4-0 run to close out the match 6-2. It was not the result Serena had hoped but she was able to get in some more time on clay ahead of the Roland Garros.
