Sofia Kenin and
Coco Gauff were convincing in their matches in Abu Dhabi moving on to the next round without any issues.
Sofia Kenin was the first of the duo to step onto the courts facing off against Yang. It was a lengthy match that almost lasted two hours with Kenin emerging victorious 7-6(4) 6-2. The first set was a very interesting one that saw Kenin fend off several break points en route to the tiebreak. She had several breakpoints and even a set point but the Chinese player stood her ground. Ultimately Kenin turned it up a notch and won the tiebreak 7-4 after which she cruised to a 6-2 2nd set victory. Kenin was very aggressive hitting 11 aces but also 8 double faults.
Her compatriot Gauff was even more impressive than Kenin against Eikeri from Norway. The match lasted 70 minutes but the end result was 6-0 6-1. Despite the crushing result, Eikeri did not capitulate easily and she fought in ever game which is why the match lasted more than you would expect with such a result. Gauff showed maturity in her game, saving all six break points she faced hitting her 1st serve at an impressive 88 % rate. All of that was more than enough for her to move to the next round.
