In a clash between two American upstarts, it was 14th seed Sofia Kenin who displayed greater mental fortitude as she defeated teenager Coco Gauff in three difficult sets.
In a match that lasted a little over two hours,
Sofia Kenin proved to be the more consistent of the two, outclassing her compatriot to win the match 6-7(5) 6-3 6-0.
With a spot in the quarterfinals at stake, both ladies put on a spectacular show in the first set. Kenin obtained an early break, but a resilient Gauff fought back to claim the set in an exciting tiebreaker.
Seemingly undaunted by the loss of the first set, Kenin exhibited poise and control that belied her years. Gauff appeared to fold under the pressure, committing numerous errors in the process.
As Kenin took the second set and obtained an early break in the third, Gauff's frustration became apparent through her body language and vocal expressions. Despite encouraging efforts from the capacity crowd, Kenin raced through the final set in 34 minutes.
Gauff's inexperience was evident during the third set, as the teenage sensation was unable to counter Kenin's defense and variety.
After conquering defending champion Naomi Osaka
in the previous round, the American hoped to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal. It's only a matter of time before this feat becomes attainable.
Kenin has been a pleasant surprise to the WTA circuit, with this victory the young American advanced to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal. Despite her diminutive stature, she packs some serious firepower and is a threat to the rest of the field.
She next faces unseeded Tunisian Ons Jabeur, who defeated Qiang Wang 7-6(4) 6-1 in the other round of 16 matchup.
