World No.4 Sofia Kenin saw her title bid come to an end on Wednesday at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, as she fell to Anett Kontaveit in straight sets.
Kontaveit tends to perform well in Stuttgart, having reached the quarterfinals or better in all four of her appearances at the event. The 2019 runner-up required 94 minutes to stun the third seed 7-5 6-4, securing her spot in another quarterfinal.
The World No.27 played aggressively from the onset, hitting 31 winners to only 20 unforced error. This victory pushes her to a career record of 11-3 in Stuttgart, and she awaits the winner between fifth seed Aryna Sabalenka and home favorite Anna Lena Friedsam.
Two-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber made quick work of Georgian Ekaterine Gorgodze, defeating the World No.123 6-2 6-2 in just 72 minutes. Kerber converted on six of 14 break points, while taking advantage of her opponent's shaky second serve. The German faces fourth seed Elina Svitolina for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Another Grand Slam champion was in action, as 2017 Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko battled past Stefanie Voegele 6-4 7-5 to secure he spot in the round of 16. Ostapenko took advantage of her opponent's inconsistency, as the Swiss hit five double faults and failed to create any opportunities on her second serve. Awaiting Ostapenko in the next round is sixth seed Karolina Pliskova, who survived a three-set encounter with German Tamara Korpatsch to advance to the round of 16.
