Former Australian Open champion
Sofia Kenin made quick work of Irina-Camelia Begu on Tuesday night, securing her spot in the quarterfinals of the Tennis In The Land Cleveland event.
Kenin looked sharp and determined in her 6-3 6-2 win, dispatching of last year's finalist in an hour and 12 minutes. The American was precise on serve, maneuvering her opponent around the court as she showed shades of the Kenin who won the Australian Open in 2020.
After winning the first set, it was almost a foregone conclusion to the outcome of the second. Begu was unable to stop the errors from creeping into her game, committing four double faults in her attempt to increase her intensity. A pair of breaks was enough for Kenin to close out the match, as the World No.265 completed the upset over the fifth seed.
By virtue of this win, Kenin has now advanced to her second quarterfinal of the season. The 23-year old reached the quarterfinals of Adelaide 1 earlier this year, losing to top seed Ashleigh Barty in straight sets.
