In a match between two close friends,
Dominic Thiem progressed to the round of 16 after
Grigor Dimitrov was forced to retire in the middle of the second set.
Thiem recorded a 0-6 4-2 (RET) win over the former World No.3, despite being outplayed in the opening set. Dimitrov looked incredible in the first set, winning 82% of points behind his first serve. The Bulgarian saved all three break points faced, and remained aggressive in his return game to claim the opener without dropping a game.
However, there was a change of fortune in the second, as Dimitrov suddenly began to experience signs of dizziness. The World No.19 had difficulty in moving around the court, and was unable to focus during his ball toss on serve. After being broken and down 2-4, the Bulgarian opted to throw in the towel, handing Thiem a ticket to the next round.
Thiem will face the winner between Fabio Fognini and rising British star Jack Draper in the round of 16.
