Rising British star Jack Draper kept his momentum going with an impressive win over Italian veteran Fabio Fognini at the Winston-Salem Open, booking his spot in the round of 16.
Draper pulled off a 6-2 4-6 6-1 victory over the World No.61, dominating the final set as Fognini appeared to run out of gas. Although both men exchanged breaks in the opening set, it was the British youngster who amped his return game to obtain a second break and clinch the first set.
The second set saw another exchange of breaks, but it was Fognini who remained aggressive behind his first serve. The former World No.9 attacked Draper's second serve, forcing another break and leveling the match at one set apiece.
Despite putting up a stellar effort in the second set, Fognini was unable to do much damage in the decider. The Italian appeared lethargic, hitting several errors in an attempt to end points quickly. Draper was quick to take advantage, breaking his opponent twice as he won 70% of points behind Fognini's second serve. The 13th seed closed out the match after two hours, securing his spot in the round of 16.
Awaiting Draper in the next round is Dominic Thiem, as the former World No.3 advanced following Grigor Dimitrov's retirement during their match earlier in the day.
