Jelena Ostapenko and
Petra Kvitova moved on to round 2 of the
Qatar Open in Doha following convincing victories.
Ostapenko was the first one to step out onto the courts and the Latvian once again showed some of her Dubai form. It took a while for her to get warmed up as she found herself trailing early on in the match but once she found a rhythm it was game over. Dodin put forward her best effort but ultimately it was not enough for Ostapenko who is playing superb tennis at the moment.
The final score was 6-4 6-2 and Ostapenko will be happy about keeping things short after a very brief turnaround from Dubai. Joining her in the 2nd round will be Petra Kvitova who played another excellent match in the Gulf. After struggling at the start of the season, Kvitova is slowly getting back to her usual level finding form in Dubai.
She continued playing great in Doha taking down Begu 6-3 6-1. The victory was a very significant one for Kvitova mentally because Begu smashed her in St. Petersburg two weeks ago. The Czech player lost that 6-4 6-0 and it left many of her fans worried. Now, in different conditions, Kvitova played excellently and exacted revenge on Begu.
The Czech player is the defending champion having bested Muguruza in the final last year and this is a good start for her.
