World number one
Iga Swiatek has revealed that she is good
to go in
Wimbledon 2023 despite injury concerns.
The third Grand Slam of the year will begin on Monday in
London where the 22-year-old has been declared as the top seed in the women’s
singles category.
There has been a concern about Swiatek’s fitness recently
when she withdrew from WTA 250 event in Bad Homburg on the day of the semifinal
clash against Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti.
However, the four-time Grand Slam winner stated that she is very ‘sure’ that her
body will be able to cope with the stress of playing in the mega-event.
“I had a really bad night,” she said. “We did with my
conditioning coach measurements in the morning. They didn't really look good because
I barely slept. I had a stomachache but I don’t know if there was something
wrong or not. Later in the day I felt ok, I'm pretty sure it's going to be
fine.”
Despite winning three French Open titles and one US Open title in her
relatively young career, Swiatek has not delivered in Wimbledon and therefore
she will be hoping to turn it around this time.
The Warsaw-born’s best outing in London was in 2021 where
she suffered a fourth-round exit after losing to last year's finalist Tunisia’s Ons
Jabeur with a score of 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.
Last year, Swiatek, who will face China’s Zhu Lin in the
first round of Wimbledon 2023 on Monday, suffered a defeat in the third round
of the competition against France’s Alizé Cornet in straight sets with a score of
6-4, 6-2.
