After getting rid of Karolina Muchova, finalist at Roland Garros in 2023,
Leylah Fernandez continued her form. She got rid of Cristina Bucsa in emphatic fashion. She sealed the win by 6-7(4) and 3-6 and moves onto the Last 16.
Bucsa started very well with a break in the first game of the match. However, Fernandez reacted instantly and accelerated to a 4-1 lead, winning four games in a row. But the Spaniard was not going to give up and, thanks to a break, managed to bring the score back to a draw. At 5-5, Bucsa broke Fernandez's serve and was ready to serve to win the set.
But the mental strength and character of the world number 25 got the better of her at the right time and sent the set to the final tie-break. In the tie-break, the left-handed tennis player started like a cyclone, taking the first four points to show that she wanted to take the first set. Bucsa came back but it was not enough and finally the Canadian won by 7-4.
Fernandez closes in two sets
Fernandez was the first to break her opponent's serve in the second set. But Bucsa reacted immediately, recovering the lost game instantly. Although as we have already mentioned above, the Canadian is not an easy prey and again achieved a new break. From that moment on, the Spanish number 1 completely fell apart and Fernandez had the opportunity to close the match with her serve but she got stressed at the worst moment for her. However, in the next game she took the match to the rest, concluding with a 6-3 final.
