The US Open of the teenagers continued today with another upset as Leylah Fernandez took down Angelique Kerber 4-6 7-6(5) 6-2.
Leylah Fernandez is a rather well known teenage tennis prodigy from Canada but her run at the 2021 US Open is something special. Not only because she is winning matches against established players but because of the way she is doing it. Fernandez once again played a very aggressive playstyle attacking at the first opportunity.
Most of that damage came from her forehand which is working exceptionally well at the US Open. It did damage early on in this match as well as she took a 4-2 lead after hitting some incredible winners. However, she collapsed after that committing far too many errors for an experience Kerber not to take advantage of.
She did and she won the opening set with 6-4. Fernandez did not give up on her playstyle and it cost her early in the 2nd set as she fell behind 1-3. After that, something simply clicked and she never looked back. Gaining confidence out of nowhere Fernandez started smashing the ball with her forehand with great success.
Kerber ran and ran trying to keep the ball in play as well as attacking when she got shorter balls but it did not matter. Fernandez was simply stunning hitting winners from all sides. She won the 2nd in a very close tiebreak with, you guessed it, some stellar winners.
In the final set, she completely smashed Kerber who ran out of gas and simply could not keep up with the bounce Fernandez who was everywhere. Two former US Open champs are out at the hands of Fernandez. The future is bright.
