Daria Kasatkina has made the brave move of coming out as gay in a recent interview with Russian blogger Vitya Kravchenko and has discussed the difficulties of being LGBTQ+ in Russia.
Homosexuality is very taboo in Russia as the country is not welcoming at all to people who identify as such. Coming out is a brave thing to do in the country and Kasatkina knows that however, she had no problem saying that she's partnered with a woman in another recent interview:
"Yes I have a girlfriend"
She then further elaborated on the topic admitting there are many taboos in Russia and some of them are more important than theirs.
"So many subjects are taboo in Russia. Some of them more important than ours. The notion of someone wanting to be gay or becoming one. So ridiculous. There is nothing easier than being straight in the world. Seriously, if there is a choice, nobody would be gay. Why make life harder, especially in Russia?"
Pretty strong words from Kasatkina who did not even blink while duscissing the topic which is quite admireable.
The Interviewer asked Kasatkina when will it be ok to hold hands in public and she quickly responded:
"Never! Judging by things now, it will never be ok. Living in the closet is impossible. It's too hard. Living in peace with yourself is the only thing that matters and f**k everyone else"
