With the 2020 US Open confirmed for August despite the pandemic, several players have began ramping up their training.
One of them is 2012 champion
Andy Murray, who is back on the court and testing whether he is able to return to competition. The Brit has not played since suffering a
pelvic injury prior to the Davis Cup Finals. He
captured his first trophy since Dubai 2017 at the 2019 European Open in Antwerp last October. This occurred during his comeback after having hip surgery following the 2019 Australian Open.
In an interview with
Metro, fellow ATP player and good friend
Feliciano Lopez spoke to a group of British journalists. He informed them that Murray was in good spirits and looking forward to the
US Open this year.
"Actually two days ago I was talking to him, and he was really pumped." Lopez said. "He was starting to practice again. I asked about the hip... he was positive. He might be able to compete again."
"It would be great for everybody, especially for him," added Lopez.
With several top players having doubts about competing at this year's event, Murray's participation could be beneficial for the tournament. Players like
Novak Djokovic,
Alexander Zverev,
Rafael Nadal and others have expressed their concerns over the strict protocols established due to the coronavirus pandemic. WTA World No.2
Simona Halep has already announced that
she will miss this year's event due to safety concerns, and many more may follow suit in the coming weeks.
