Maria Sakkari has withdrawn from the
China Open which is due to take place next week in Beijing. She continues to struggle with a shoulder injury which took her out of the US Open;.
Sakkari who had to miss Cincinnati after the Olympic Games decided against travelling to China due to her ongoing struggle with the injury.
This has not fully healed. Sakkari's withdrawal from Beijing marks another setback in her recovery. The injury has prevented her from competing and also has seen her slide basically out of the top 10 as of next week.
The decision to skip Beijing comes as she looks to prioritise her health. But given that Ons Jabeur withdrew from the rest of the season with injury, it is unlikely that we will see Sakkari for the rest of the season now. A sad end for one of the WTA's leading lights.
