Maria Sharapova will play Pickleball Slam 2 teaming with John McEnroe facing off against Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi on Sunday, but ahead of the $1m tournament in Las Vegas, she was also quizzed about the next generation in tennis.
In particular Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva who Sharapova has previously lavished praise on before albeit with the latter shutting down comparisons between the pair during her Wimbledon run. Sharapova said that she was impressed on how Gauff handled herself after winning the US Open which saw the teenage phenom rise to the occasion and become a Grand Slam champion for the first time in her career after such promise. While Andreeva has reached the fourth round at two Grand Slams and was voted the WTA Newcomer of the Year during 2023.
"I've loved watching a new generation rise up to the occasion. I was so impressed with how Coco handled the [US Open] victory in New York last year. Also, it’s great seeing the rise of new names and opportunities for athletes like Mirra Andreeva," she said to Forbes.
"We’re seeing so much more consistency in the women's game and that has been really refreshing," she added.
