Ukrainian tennis star Marta Kostyuk faced an unexpected setback during her offseason break when her car was broken into during a trip to Milan with her husband, George Kyzymenko. The incident occurred after Kostyuk wrapped up her 2024 tennis season, which concluded with a third-round appearance at the Wuhan Open.
During her Milan visit, Kostyuk discovered that the rear window of her Porsche SUV had been shattered. She shared her ordeal on Instagram, posting a photo of the damaged window patched with tape. Alongside the image, she wrote with an air of humor, "Expensive trip to Milano. Whoever did this—God bless you. Truly."
While the total value of the stolen items remains unknown, Kostyuk revealed that her sports equipment was left untouched in the trunk, joking, "Clearly, they are not into sports."
Despite the unfortunate incident, Kostyuk can reflect on an exceptional 2024 season, where she reached several career milestones. She competed in 20 tournaments, with highlights including finals appearances at the San Diego Open and the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. At these events, she fell to Katie Boulter and Elena Rybakina, respectively.
Kostyuk also reached the semifinals at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, losing to top seed and eventual champion Iga Swiatek. Additionally, she made quarterfinal runs at notable events such as the Adelaide International, the Australian Open, the Paris Olympics, and the Korea Open.
In doubles, Kostyuk partnered with Elena-Gabriela Ruse to reach the semifinals at Roland Garros, where they were narrowly defeated by Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani.
Kostyuk started the year ranked World No. 38 and climbed to a career-high of World No. 16 in June, ending the season ranked No. 18—her best year-end position to date.
While her Milan trip took an unexpected turn, Kostyuk’s sense of humor and resilience continue to shine, embodying the determination that has defined her career.
