Former top 5 Caroline Garcia doesn't face a break point all match and beats former #1 and two times #AusOpen champion Naomi Osaka 6-4, 7-6(2) to reach the 2nd round. An INCREDIBLE performance!
Naomi Osaka's Australian Open comeback has not gone to plan albeit due to an utterly incredible performance from former WTA Finals champion, Caroline Garcia who has fallen down the rankings over the past year but showed a superb level to down the former World No.1 6-4, 7-6(2).
Garcia did not face a break point all game and Osaka who many expected to shock the former top five star on her Grand Slam comeback will not do so. Karolina Pliskova similar to Garcia had not played really at her best level for some time before she encountered Osaka, but the game of the former multiple Australian Open champion seems to have brought out the best in this case in Garcia.
She produced 13 aces and 89% of points won with her first serve (33/37) overall to win in straight sets. Also she added 34 winners in comparison to 20 from Osaka and 24 unforced errors to 25 from Osaka's racquet. It was a display that was too good from Garcia and now Osaka will go back to the drawing board.
Albeit it won't be too much of a blow for a player who has played two matches in over a year and will likely need some match practice in order to build herself up again to her best level and likely Melbourne came too soon for that. While for Garcia, it will be a huge confidence boost and one she will need after going through turmoil since winning in Fort Worth.
Still a classy operator and a big chance will also open up for a run as she will face Magdalena Frech next with Zakharova or Juvan waiting in the next round. Leylah Fernandez or Coco Gauff are the two seeds who are set likely to collide in the third round come what may with Garcia the big name who could face them.
