Naomi Osaka bowed out of the 2024 Brisbane International after falling to former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova (16th seed) in a hard-fought match, concluding 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4. The Czech player, a three-time champion in Brisbane, advanced to the third round, aiming for a new trophy in the Australian city.
Pliskova held a 3-2 head-to-head advantage, with their last meeting four years ago, also in Brisbane, where the Czech secured a 6-7(10), 7-6(3), 6-2 victory in the semifinal back in 2020.
In the first set, Osaka gained an edge by capitalizing on her fifth break point in the second game. Still, Pliskova swiftly returned the break in her first opportunity, leveling the score at 2-2, supported by her powerful service. The Czech struggled with her first-serve accuracy (only 53% in the set), and Osaka took advantage, winning 80% of returns with the second service. Another break from the Japanese player secured her the set 6-3. Pliskova attempted to exploit Osaka's lack of rhythm and move her across the court, but Osaka's aggressive play, particularly with her strong forehand, dominated the match.
In the second set, Pliskova improved her service, and the duel leveled. In the third game, Pliskova faced a 0-40 deficit, but Osaka couldn't capitalize on her chances. Both players showcased their prowess in serving, reaching the tie-break without offering break opportunities. Pliskova took the lead in the tie-break with a quick mini-break and, without dropping points on her serve, claimed the set 7-6(4).
In the third set, the Czech continued to display a formidable service, seizing an opportunity in the third game to take the decisive break. Despite Osaka having some break chances, she couldn't overcome Pliskova, who secured the victory 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.
Despite the defeat, Osaka leaves the tournament with positive feelings, looking ahead to her next challenge at the Australian Open, a tournament she won in 2019 and 2021. Pliskova advances to the third round, awaiting the winner of the match between the 3rd seed Jelena Ostapenko (No. 12) and the Italian Camila Giorgi (No. 55).
