Coco Gauff is through to the Quarter-Finals of the 2024 China Open after Naomi Osaka retired at the start of the deciding set after a superb contest as expected between the pair.
Gauff won through 3-6, 6-4 retired with Osaka in particular playing superbly during the opening set of their contest. She was in control of the match until 6-3, 4-3. But the last 10 minutes saw her fade away.
What looked like a back problem for Osaka, she hugged Gauff in a warm embrace as she retired. Yulia Starodubtseva has had a superb run and will be the next opponent of Gauff in the Quarter-Finals. She saw off Anna Kalinskaya earlier today in a 7-5, 6-0 win.
It is brutal luck again for Naomi Osaka who was playing some of her best tennis before she was forced to retire. She has been with Patrick Mouratoglou for the first time this week and navigated towards the top 50 for the first time. This circumnavigates the likelihood of having to qualify for future tournaments.
But also comes at the worst time of course playing her best tennis and also ahead of a return home in the coming weeks to play in Japan. Hopefully it is just precaution and she will be back next week. But Gauff continues to move on.

Unfortunately, Naomi Osaka had to retire from the match against Coco Gauff due to her injury despite willing herself through in the first set. THE LEVEL IS THERE.
These two besties tho ❤️🩹
Wow.
Osaka retires after losing the second set to Coco Gauff, who is into the QFs.
3-6, 6-4, ret.
Naomi was in control of the match till 6-3, *4-3 but the last 10 minutes were very weird. Looks like a back problem.
