Aryna Sabalenka dominated
Zheng Qinwen and returns to the
US Open semifinals after a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory. The World No. 2 made a statement by defeating the recent Olympic gold medalist, and if she can maintain this level in her upcoming matches, the Belarusian is likely the top contender for the title.
The 2023 US Open runner-up secured her 75th Grand Slam tournament victory and reached the semifinals of a major for the 9th time in her career.
Sabalenka outclasses Zheng
The pressure Zheng felt upon entering the court was evident from the start, and she was far from her recent form. Service errors plagued her from the beginning, and Sabalenka took full advantage, dominating with her powerful forehand whenever the Chinese player was forced to use her second serve.
Sabalenka quickly secured a break and surged to a 3-0 lead as the match remained disjointed due to Zheng's errors, who managed only 31% of first serves compared to 67% for the Belarusian. Everything on the court revolved around Sabalenka, while Zheng seemed like just another spectator.
Sabalenka secured a second break in the 6th game and then flawlessly closed the set with her serve, winning 6-1.
A double fault from the Chinese player at the start of the second set signaled that her errors were far from over. The World No. 7 never found her rhythm, made numerous mistakes, especially with her forehand, and couldn't compete with Sabalenka.
This year, Sabalenka won her second Grand Slam title by beating Zheng in the final.
The former World No. 1 executed several drop shots and displayed impressive agility, keeping constant pressure on Zheng's serve, who managed only 52% of first serves compared to 86% for Sabalenka.
The pressure got to Zheng again in the 5th game when another double fault at a crucial moment gave Sabalenka the chance to secure a second break and easily set her on the path to victory.
Finally, the World No. 2 maintained her composure on serve and closed out the victory 6-1, 6-2. Sabalenka has now reached the US Open semifinals for the 4th consecutive time and will face local player Emma Navarro (No. 12) for a spot in the final.
