Sealing the title last week at the China Open,
Coco Gauff continues her stellar form into the
Wuhan Open and is on the verge of qualification for the WTA Finals.
The American came to Wuhan after a short turnaround defeating Karolina Muchova in the final who decided against playing this week instead setting her sights on Ningbo.
But it isn't a week full of expectations albeit she perhaps shattered those when she saw off Viktoriya Tomova sealing it 6-1, 6-2 to move into the Last 16. There she faces Marta Kostyuk who has been a bit of a nightmare in the past in terms of their game styles not gelling.
She said prior to Wuhan that she was treating it more as a practice week than one to really pin her hopes on. "I'm just taking it day by day. Last week was treating it like practice. I think even more so now just because it was, like, two long weeks in Beijing. Here it's a quick turnaround. Only hit once today. I play tomorrow."
"Yeah, I think it's just handling the conditions. The result right now, whether it's good or bad, it is what it is. I think these are the weeks on tour that you kind of just treat as like practice."
Gauff started poorly being broken. But immediately arrested that as she won six consecutive games in the first set to win it 6-1. She hit two aces and won 83% of the points after her first serve. She converted three out of four break point chances she got and was almost flawless.
She won four consecutive games more in the second set going 4-0 up and despite some late resistance from Tomova of sorts to make it at least a little less flattering for Gauff, it was a dominant win as she won the second 6-2 to move through.
