Ukraine’s tennis star
Elina Svitolina has revealed that she ‘mentally’
feels safer in her country than anywhere else in the world despite the ongoing
conflict with Russia.
Both European countries are involved in an armed confrontation
since February 2022 which led to the loss of lives on both sides.
Svitolina was quoted by PA News where she
stated the kind of precautions she has to take because of the security
situation in the country.
“Of course, it’s unsafe [in Ukraine] because the country’s
in a state of war,” she said. “I have to plan it really well with the safety
measures and be careful always. But mentally I feel safer in Ukraine than
anywhere else in the world.”
The Odesa-born further acknowledged that she is very keen on
keeping track of political developments in the country but also stressed that
she has no plans of becoming an active part of any political activity in the
future.
“I’ve been quite interested in politics,” said the
28-year-old. “Especially this time when I was pregnant, I have lots of friends
who have different positions in Ukrainian politics and many friends as well who
know a lot about it.
"But I never really wanted to go that way. I just want to
be aware what is happening in my country, to learn and to understand how we can
help at different levels for the people.”
