Initial wildcards have been announced for the 2023
Wimbledon Championships which will take place between July 3 - July 16, 2023 with
Elina Svitolina and
Venus Williams among the leading names who are now involved in the tournament.
Svitolina in particular has just returned from maternity leave and albeit has flown up the rankings lost out early in Birmingham and won't get the necessary ranking points to qualify by right for the Main Draw.
She foreshadowed a potential wildcard saying after losing to Linda Fruhvirtova in Birmingham that she couldn't play next week with Bad Homburg and Eastbourne the final tournaments before Wimbledon and that she wasn't in the top 100 before the cut off.
“I’m not playing next week because I didn’t sign up. I’m not getting directly into Wimbledon because the signing closed before I entered the top 100. We’ll see. Hopefully I get a chance for a wild card.”
Those hopes have been answered and she will now take her spot in the Main Draw.
This cause has also been aided by the LTA helping Ukrainian players with accommodation and court time and Svitolina is the highest profile not to already be in the main draw.
As is former Wimbledon champion, Venus Williams who at 43 rolled back the years in Birmingham earlier this week seeing off Camila Giorgi.
Of course after being intermittently on the tour, she fails to have a high enough ranking, but being a tennis legend, she was always set for a wildcard.
Other high profile editions include David Goffin as well as British representation. This features Nottingham champion and British Number One, Katie Boulter.
As well as Jodie Burrage, Harriet Dart, Katie Swan and Heather Watson. On the Men's side, Arthur Fery and Ryan Peniston who won his opener at Queen's have also been handed wildcards as well as Liam Broady.
There are two further in the Men's to be announced which will likely be reserved for an out of nowhere winner.
