Palermo finalist Anett Kontaveit and Prague finalist Elise Mertens have brought their clay court form onto the US Hard Courts easing through the early results on Day Two of the Western & Southern Open.

Mertens, the World No.22 vanquished World No.46, Rebecca Peterson in a 6-0, 6-2 win in an hour flat; while Kontaveit defeat Daria Kasatkina in similarly emphatic fashion winning 6-3, 6-1 as the number 12 seed defeated the lucky loser.
Other wins included Netherlands' Arantxa Rus who defeated Alison van Uytvanck which has significance; as it means she will take on Serena Williams next.
CiCi Bellis held off a comeback from a similarly in-form player Oceane Dodin winning 6-2, 3-6, 7-6; her reward is a tie against No.5 seed Aryna Sabalenka.
There were some shocks of sorts though with Magda Linette, World No.35 heading out to former World No.2, Vera Zvonareva who is now World No.268 and came through qualifying. This was in a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 win.
Tenth seed Marketa Vondrousova is also out; with Laura Siegemund continuing the qualifier charge winning a gruelling tie 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4. With a seventh into the second round.
Top Seed Open champion Jennifer Brady will not face Amanda Anisimova either; with Jessica Pegula producing brilliance to win 7-6, 6-4.
Leylah Fernandez is currently in front against Ons Jabeur; also with Karolina Pliskova also in action later tonight, will it be a night where the big players fall?
