Mirra Andreeva is the latest big name who will not play at the Adelaide International next week which starts on January 6 announcing her withdrawal.

Andreeva lost out in the semi-finals of the Brisbane International on Saturday to Aryna Sabalenka which likely prompted the move as far many one tournament is enough in terms of preparation for the Australian Open.

She also played in doubles scooping the title with regular partner Diana Shnaider who she won Olympic silver with in 2024 and aims to team with regularly during 2025.

“I am sorry that I am unable to come and play in Adelaide - I have heard great things about the tournament and was hoping to see it for myself. Good luck to all involved and hope to see you next year!”

This means while Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro will anchor the line-up, it also sees Andreeva join Jasmine Paolini as the next big name to pull out over the last 24 hours. While this hands Maria Sakkari a lifeline too.

Andreeva withdrew during Sakkari's mammoth epic against Peyton Stearns in qualifying which saw the American prevail in three sets. But ironically both qualified anyway for the tournament.

Leylah Fernandez, Marie Bouzkova, Belinda Bencic were also among the qualifiers with Bencic testing her metal against Anna Kalinskaya in her full WTA Tour return. She played United Cup last week and has played some Challenger tennis in recent months but not played a full WTA 500 tournament.
