Jessica Pegula delivered as expected, securing an easy win over Xinyu Wang, while Danielle Collins was swept aside by Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in the third round of the Australian Open.
Mixed fortunes for two of the local favourites, as the draw loses one of its strongest contenders with Collins' exit. However, Pegula remains on course and will have the chance to avenge Collins' defeat when she faces Svitolina next.
World No. 4 Jessica Pegula needed just one hour and three minutes to breeze past China's Xinyu Wang (No. 42) with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory. Pegula took control early and never looked back, posting a 78% first-serve rate and winning 67% of those points, leaving Wang with no real chances to threaten her.
The first set started with Wang breaking Pegula at the first opportunity, but the American immediately responded with a break of her own. From 2-2 onwards, Pegula shifted into another gear, winning four straight games and wrapping up the set 6-2 without facing another break point.
The second set followed a similar script, with Pegula dominating from the baseline. Breaks in the second and sixth games sealed a comprehensive victory for the American. On the other side, Wang struggled with just 50% of first serves in play, an unforced error that proved costly against a player of Pegula’s calibre. Despite the loss, the 23-year-old Chinese player secured a return to the top 40 in the rankings starting Monday.

A disappointing defeat for local hope Danielle Collins, who never found her rhythm against Elina Svitolina in a match that looked more balanced on paper. Both players are former WTA 1000 champions and are separated by less than a year in age, but it was the Ukrainian who completely dominated proceedings.
Collins started strong on serve but couldn't maintain the momentum. After leading 2-1, Svitolina took full control, breaking twice in a row and saving all three break points she faced. The Ukrainian won five consecutive games to close the set 6-2.
The second set was even more one-sided, with Svitolina racing to a 4-0 lead after winning nine straight games. A frustrated Collins struggled to find answers, but with nothing left to lose, she began swinging more freely. She managed to recover one of the breaks, even saving a match point, but it wasn’t enough. Svitolina wrapped up the win 6-2, 6-4 and will face Pegula in the next round.
