Jessica
Pegula continues to showcase consistency in the WTA, reaching her 10th
quarter-final in 13 tournaments, only surpassed by
Iga Swiatek.
The
American tennis player has maintained her position as one of the most
consistent players on the WTA tour, consistently advancing in the tournaments
she competes in. Once again, she has secured a spot in the top eight thanks to
her performance at the WTA National Bank Toronto Open.
Pegula
holds a record of 37/13 this year, having reached the quarter-finals five
times, the semi-finals four times, and the final once at the Doha Open, where
she fell 3-6, 0-6 to the Polish player Iga Swiatek.
Precisely,
the world No. 1 is the only player who surpasses Pegula in this statistic,
having reached the quarter-finals 11 times. The American's consistency allowed
her to climb to world No. 3 this week, her best career ranking, displacing
Elena Rybakina from the top 3, a position she had held alongside Swiatek and
Aryna Sabalenka in recent months.
So far in
2023, Pegula has only missed reaching the quarter-finals of tournaments on
three occasions, and only one of those times did she exit in the first round,
at Indian Wells, defeated by Petra Kvitova.
In the clay
season, she also experienced two early exits: at the French Open, where she
only reached the third round, falling to the 28th seed Elise Mertens, and at
the Rome Open, where she was defeated in the first round by her compatriot
Taylor Townsend, being the only tournament where she exited in the first round.
Despite her
consistency, Pegula has yet to secure a title in 2023, with her most recent
title dating back to October 2022 when she defeated Maria Sakkari to claim the
title at the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open.
Regarding
her current participation in Montreal, Pegula has already surpassed Yulia
Putintseva and Jasmine Paolini, and she will face her doubles partner Coco
Gauff in the quarter-finals. Gauff comes with a streak of six consecutive wins,
including the title at last week's DC Open.
