Muguruza and Alexandrova secure semifinals spot in Shenzhen

Former world number one, Garbine Muguruza started the day in Shenzhen when she faced Zarina Diyas. The 6th seeded player at the tournament previously defeated Wang and Rogers as she is seeking a quick start of the 2020 Season.

The Spanish player started the match in a good way when she has won the first set 6-4. However, she struggled to remain high-quality play also in the second when she lost it 2-6. But the 2-time Grand Slam champion used all of her experience to win the third set 6-4 and advance into the semifinals at the Shenzhen Open.

Muguruza was followed by Ekaterina Alexandrova who ended the 2019 Season in Limoges with the victory. The Russian continues in a good form also during the 2020 Season when she does have an 8-match winning streak at the moment. She has defeated the home player Wang in more than 2 hours 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Alexandrova and Muguruza will meet in the semifinals in Shenzhen. Another semifinal couple will be made up of Rybakina or Mertens and Bondarenko or Pliskova.

After her previous victory, Muguruza was happy to be winning again. "I managed to play well and get the match under my belt. Yes, it is a long time since I won consecutive matches. So I’m looking forward to my next game, to keep playing and hopefully to keep advancing in the tournament."
